The Waitakere Filter Station was built in 1927-1928 by an all-Dalmatian work force on Fletcher Construction’s payroll. Excavations were done by hand. Construction of the Waitakere tunnel was a laborious task, due to hard clay and the need to fill surrounding swampland.
